For successive castings, I do use store bought plastic chain from Ebay now. It saves building time.

This is an awesome project. Love the detail, and the layering with plastic sheeting. Great job! If you want to make larger sections, but keep the same detail, check out Hydrospan from the Compleat Sculptor.

Makeup Effects, Masks and Creatures / Re: Rob Burman Masterclass

As you might see, there were some bubbles spoiling the mould - two on the nose and one on the lip.  I really should have fixed them, but we were rushing a little bit to get them ready for the reporters from the local paper.  I would now have filled them with some of the thickened PAX Rob had with him.

Makeup Effects, Masks and Creatures / Rob Burman Masterclass
« Last post by Stevedix on June 28, 2019, 12:04:56 pm »
This week I have been learning to make foam prosthetics in a masterclass with Steve's old friend, Rob Burman.  We've learned how to take a mould of a face, build up a sculpture, prepare it for foam and finally apply the resultant makeup.  I decided to try a "Planet of the Apes" style makeup, as many of the others had already gained experience in mould-making and latex foam casting, and their projects were very advanced.  I wanted to do something simple and basic, but not boring (like a scar), so I hit on the original Apes.  My sculpt was based on various versions of apes played by Roddy McDowell, but slightly feminized, as I had to build my sculpt on a lifecast of one of the other students, Sandra.  As you can see from the photos, we had enormous fun with the makeup.

The photos of Sandra are taken outside a nearby bar called "Monkeys", which features a planet of the apes style graphic.  Unfortunately it wasn't open, so we went to Rewe (big german supermarket chain) and bought bananas, playing up the character.  Unfortunately Cologne people aren't easily impressed, although we got a small smile out of the cashier as I smacked Sandra's hand away from the bananas whilst they were waiting to be paid for.

Because of time constraints, a lifecast was made of me, but it was too late to do anything, so I volunteered to have one of Rob's Rubberwear noses applied to me.  As you can see, we had a lot of fun.

Thanx!

I'm still trying to decide if I should make molds of the main hull sections and pull the clear parts into them, or just use these shapes as Bucks.

Thoughts anyone?

Props / Body Snatcher Pods
« Last post by C Babbage on June 27, 2019, 08:02:31 pm »
This is a prop, that was also a costume.
Ten years ago or so my wife and I decided that for our Halloween costumes we did not want to dress up.  Instead we had the idea of going as pod people from Invasion of the Body Snatchers.  The idea being we would dress in our regular clothes, and carry around these pods and never acknowledge them.  First two parties we brought them to, nobody got it.  We finally did this for another party a couple years later, and everyone got it!  That group is the only group we ever go to party with on Halloween now.
The pods are quilted fabric "pillows" modeled off the original 1956 movie.  They still are in our living room.

All the hand cut parts that stack up in the Excelsior's grilled section characteristics...

Pics of the process.

Neck/dorsal

Neck to saucer adapter/fairing. framed with styrene and filled with Apoxie Sculpt. love that stuff!

Dorsal stack in a hand made jig.

Cutting the trenched for the torp launchers

3D modeled torp launchers. list of greebles to recreate these came for a VERY reliable source.  ;-)

Entire roughed out dorsal section.

Warp Nacelles NEXT...

All cut by hand initially the same size. The ones I thought didn't cut the mustard were relegated to "spacer duty" Here shows the two different plates.

Both plate sized are stacked in another hand made jig for final shaping.

Once shaped, they are stacked for cementing on the jigs and allowed to set for a short period.

… then pulled from the jig and clamped and pressed till fully cured.

More hand made sections. the bridge. recent high res photos resolved to actual shape of the NX Excelsior. It was thought for the longest time the the bridge was a simple dome flanked by a wall that flanked both sides and went around the rear.

The Impulse crystal trench was fabricated from a DQ Blizzard cup cover. The dome is 3D printed. It will be cleaned up and molded, then cast in clear resin.

Aft Torp launchers were 3D modeled and printed. I determined that these were mounted on a circular plate that was cut just a bit more than half. I actually need to make a new one because there are two stripes that are about 5mm wide that extend to the sides of the hull.

Completely scratch built Planetary Dome and light trenches.

trenched from styrene.

Dome cast from a 4" Christmas ball. I tried 4" and 4.5".

Then scribed on a Lazy-Suzan and a compass.

Bridge from scratch with new hi-res images as a reference.

Primary Hull masters/Bucks completed.

Secondary Hull Master/Buck completed

Upper saucer's super structure Master/Buck completed

Warp nacell Masters/Bucks completed

These masters will be vacuum formed on clear. I have window masks with the help of Lou Delmaso, and Orbital Drydocks for the hull for lighting.

Here's the project as it sits now. need to get back to it!

Hope you like it. I've been on it since 2014. Wish I worked as fast as Steve does!  ;-)
