Makeup Effects, Masks and Creatures / Making a monkey of myself.
« on: January 16, 2021, 01:41:14 am »
As Steve has been making a "Planet of the Apes" mask for a while, I thought I'd post my efforts to do something simian... er similar.

As you might know, a year and a half ago, I took a course with Rob Burman, and since then, have been practicing on making foam rubber mask and appliances.

My main aim has been to replicate Cornelius.  Unfortunately, COVID and a heap of other troubles got in the way, so progress has been slow.

Here are a few links to the work on Instagram.

As you might see from the last link, the first try went ok, but due to a minor mixup on the foam, it didn't comout great.  Also, to produce another mask, I have to have a couple of other projects in parallel, as the smallest amount of foam I can mix is way too much for just the ape prosthetics, so in the meantime I've been working on a Klingon and some Vulcan ears, to use up the rest of the next batch.

Art and Sculpture / Another New Painting
« on: September 04, 2019, 06:45:09 am »
My latest work,  The portraits were painted separately and stuck onto the background.  The planet and stars are done by flicking a loaded paintbrush.  The galaxy was sprayed, and the gas clouds made by wiping the wet spray with crunched-up newspaper.

The Asteroid base was originally quite different, but it didn't look "original series" enough.  Finally I redrew the asteroid to make it more like Vasquez rocks, and decorated it with bits of the k7 space station.  Instant Matt Jefferies.

Makeup Effects, Masks and Creatures / Re: Rob Burman Masterclass

As you might see, there were some bubbles spoiling the mould - two on the nose and one on the lip.  I really should have fixed them, but we were rushing a little bit to get them ready for the reporters from the local paper.  I would now have filled them with some of the thickened PAX Rob had with him.

Makeup Effects, Masks and Creatures / Rob Burman Masterclass
« on: June 28, 2019, 12:04:56 pm »
This week I have been learning to make foam prosthetics in a masterclass with Steve's old friend, Rob Burman.  We've learned how to take a mould of a face, build up a sculpture, prepare it for foam and finally apply the resultant makeup.  I decided to try a "Planet of the Apes" style makeup, as many of the others had already gained experience in mould-making and latex foam casting, and their projects were very advanced.  I wanted to do something simple and basic, but not boring (like a scar), so I hit on the original Apes.  My sculpt was based on various versions of apes played by Roddy McDowell, but slightly feminized, as I had to build my sculpt on a lifecast of one of the other students, Sandra.  As you can see from the photos, we had enormous fun with the makeup.

The photos of Sandra are taken outside a nearby bar called "Monkeys", which features a planet of the apes style graphic.  Unfortunately it wasn't open, so we went to Rewe (big german supermarket chain) and bought bananas, playing up the character.  Unfortunately Cologne people aren't easily impressed, although we got a small smile out of the cashier as I smacked Sandra's hand away from the bananas whilst they were waiting to be paid for.

Because of time constraints, a lifecast was made of me, but it was too late to do anything, so I volunteered to have one of Rob's Rubberwear noses applied to me.  As you can see, we had a lot of fun.

I don't know what is wrong with the picture upload, but it constantly gives me errors.  Here's the rest of the pictures.

Props / Stargate Atlantis Gun

I built this for a friend who wanted to cosplay Ronon Dex.  Unfortunately, she never got round to it, although there is a happy end : she now works as a seamstress for the Opera in Vienna.

The gun itself was largely made out of PVC Foam (forex) , brass pipe, milliput and some extruded polystyrene foam for the rounded bits.  The removable power cell was a piece of pvc pipe bulked out by wrapping with styrene, with the transparent end cast from resin.  It has a cheap LED light run off a coin cell built in, and is retained by a magnet. The wooden handgrips are carefully painted pvc, wrapped in braided wraith hair - in reality nylon string. The emitters are Euro shop plastic diamonds, and the LEDs are plastic stick-in pearls painted with translucent acrylics.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.  That looks incredible.

Art and Sculpture / New Paintings

Seven of Nine and Kirk.  Kirk was an old half-finished painting that I found and finished.  Seven of Nine was an experiment in using gouache as a primer for wood and painting over it.

Meanwhile, my three Spock posters are selling slowly..   I got invited to sit outside the Fantastic Store in Bonnerstr. and sell prints while drawing, and I also won 2nd prize in the art show at FedCon.
